1544678 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica , Volume 2 — Arrian ARRIAN ( Flavius Arrianus ), of Nicomedia in Bithynia, Greek historian and philosopher, was born about A.D. 96, and lived during the reigns of Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Arianism, in Christianity, the Christological position that Jesus, as the Son of God, was created by God. It was proposed early in the 4th century by Arius of Alexandria and was popular throughout much of the Eastern and Western Roman empires. It was denounced as a heresy by the Council of Nicaea in 325. Arrian was born in Nicomedia (present-day İzmit), the provincial capital of Bithynia. Dio called him Flavius Arrianus Nicomediansis.

Arrian takes for granted much that a modern reader (and perhaps some of his own public) might not know; in particular, he plunges into the story of Alexander’s campaigns without telling us anything about the condition of Macedon, Greece or Persia at the time, of the circumstances of his own accession or of the military resources at his command.
