Sibelius' "Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47" is a work that has baffled me for years. Only within the past year or so have I finally come around to what I believe it's about and trying to express. I suppose one problem was trying to find the 'right' interpretation.

The piece illustrates that not only do darkness and beauty coexist, they enhance each other. The Sibelius concerto - his only one - dates from 1905 in its final revised form. It is a symphonic work: austere, almost glacial, with a somber autumnal beauty that is haunting in its muted resignation and brooding innigkeit. David Oistrakh provides a luminous, gorgeously conceived and executed performance recorded in December 1959. Jean Sibelius's violin concerto is the most frequently recorded and performed concerto of the violin concertos composed in the 20th century. At the start of the 21st century there were over 50 recordings available.
